CV
Michael E. Fournier, MBA is President of SoCal Management Accounting, a management consulting firm which focuses on the decision costing needs of small and mid-sized businesses. Before establishing SoCal M.A. in 2010, he had over twenty years of management accounting and cost analysis experience, primarily in aerospace and medical technology. Mike earned his Bachelor’s degree from CA State Long Beach and an MBA from the prestigious Peter F. Drucker Management Center at the Claremont Graduate School.
Mike’s experience in bringing cost effective advanced costing methodologies to SMB’s:
- Standard costing, which is used by most manufacturing companies. Mike is an expert at utilizing a standard costing methodology in a manufacturing environment and in variance analysis. Standard costing is only useful as a management tool if the standards are maintained and variance analysis performed regularly.
- ERP systems implementation experience including BAAN and Syspro. A critical member of more than one implementation team, since cost accounting touches every function in a manufacturing business.
- Advanced costing scenarios, ( i.e. make/buy, price and/or cost changes, etc.).
- Implementing the balanced scorecard methodology and operational metrics. Most balanced scorecards do not have a long life due to poor implementation and lack of consensus on metrics measurement. Mike easily avoided these costly errors with proper planning and reaching consensus prior to launch, giving proper site to site comparisons of performance.
- Bringing an activity based costing methodology to a medical products company, the ABC methodology gave the company a better grasp of its real costs and aided in improving product profitability and transfer pricing.
Mike has been an adjunct professor of cost accounting and financial reporting at UCR Extension. In 2010 he started the Society of Cost Management.
